West Side Cafe, located at 218 West 72nd Street (between Broadway and West End), appears to have closed their doors for good. I was walking down the street and noticed their windows were covered. When I walked inside, I saw that it had been partially emptied. To confirm the bad news, I found the space listed on Loopnet.com (it was listed just yesterday).
The asking price is $125 per square foot per year, and between the ground floor and the basement, the total square footage is 1,600 square feet. So the annual rent they are seeking is $200,000, or $16,666 per month.
With this in mind, it’s unlikely West Side Cafe’s replacement will be anything like West Side Cafe.

Another one bites the dust. God damnit. #upperwestside #nyc #storeclosing
This UWS street has a lot of change in the works.
The new development two doors down, at 214 West 72nd Street, will likely contribute to an accelerated rate of retail trading once construction is complete (if it hasn’t already).
And the rental building known as “The Corner”, at 200 West 72nd Street, was recently acquired and is undergoing a condo conversion, The Real Deal recently reported. The developers are aiming to get an average price of $2 million per apartment. It should be noted, though, that this has always been an expensive building. Previous rental listings at The Corner included studios for $3,500 and one-bedrooms as high as $7,500!!
Trading Lunch Spots
We’ve had two recent examples of one lunch place closing for another one to take its place.
The long-time retail tenant of 2067 Broadway, Gigi Cafe, closed in November of 2018, and was replaced by Freshly Bagel at the end of January.
Tasty Cafe also closed late last year, and we recently learned they would be replaced by Cafe Metro.
So, will West Side Cafe be replaced by a similar eatery? A chain restaurant?
