The Central Park Conservancy is presenting a new, free community event next month that’s built for families who want to unplug, take in some fall beauty, and explore the park together. It’s a self-guided tour and scavenger hunt through one of the park’s wooded areas, and participants will use sights and sounds to find plants, animals, and other landmarks while learning what makes the park’s woodlands so special. The Conservancy says it’s designed to get families and friends outside and enjoying everything the park has to offer during the fall.

The event is called Wonder in the Woods, and it takes place on Saturday, October 3 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. It starts at the Davis Center and loops through the North Woods, which the Conservancy describes as the largest of Central Park’s three forested landscapes. Along the route, participants will be on the lookout for plants, animals, and other landmarks as they discover the natural world around them.The North Woods is one of several habitats the Conservancy maintains. Its staff care for the park’s woodlands, wetlands, and meadows as part of their work to keep the 843-acre ecosystem healthy and beautiful, and to provide climate mitigation support to the rest of New York City.
