Partner up. Jorge Vera and Avi Ro invite you and your partner for Bachata dancing in the open air at the 79th Street Boat Basin.
“We tried a few places and found the floor here at the 79th Street Boat Basin to really work well for dancing,” said Jorge Vera, one of the organizers. A fresh breeze off the Hudson, Bachata music, and, under the arches from the late 1800s, surprisingly remarkable acoustics make for a Covid-19 cautious club scene. “We mix up the music a little bit, but we play 95% Bachata,” Jorge added.
Every Saturday, free lessons start the fun from 4 – 5pm. Then the floor is open and the dancing continues until 11pm. “So, come dancing,” they say welcomingly. “Bring yourself, a desire to learn and dance, your own water and hand sanitizer. And what you bring, you take away; no rubbish left behind. If you feel sick, relax at home and join us when you feel better.”
Feel the rhythm, dance, take in the sunset. ¡Ven bailar!

How is this safe during the Covid pandemic? You can’t couple dance in a group safely. Sorry. I’m out. Take it to Zoom!

Dance studios are still closed…for good reason. I can’t wait to go back to class. But this is utterly irresponsible.

Did the commenters watch the video? The dancers are spread out, almost everyone is wearing a mask, and those that are not may be couples in the same household “bubble.” This certainly looks safer than the crowded bars on Amsterdam Avenue.
Kat French, perception is a funny thing: I see 20 people dancing, and 5 or 6 of them wearing masks. In my books that’s not “almost everyone”.
And these are studio social dancers who regularly change partners after each song. While this certainly may be “safer” than crowded indoor bars, that doesn’t mean it is actually safe.
Recently NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver came under heavy criticism for issuing a permit to a Tango group for social dancing in the park, just like this group. Permit was eventually rescinded after the Mayor, Governor, Office of Nightlife, Parks Department, and City Councilpeople were contacted by the community over the public health concerns. Hope the UWS community members will also take actions to keep NYC safe from this irresponsible public event as well.
