Yoga Studio Closes After Early Morning Fire on West 83rd Street

The FDNY received an early morning call about a fire just steps away from one of its firehouses.

Fire officials say they received a call at 5:07 a.m. about a fire at 140 West 83rd Street (between Columbus and Amsterdam Avenues), just a few addresses away from Engine 74 at 120 West 83rd Street.

According to NYPD and FDNY dispatch calls, the fire appears to have started on the building’s third floor. The building, a four-story brownstone, is home to multiple businesses including Candlestick Pilates and NY Loves Yoga.

We spoke to Hallee Altman, the owner of Candlestick Pilates, who told us her space was not damaged and that she’s planning on reopening as soon as the fire marshall tells her the air quality is okay.

NY Loves Yoga shared an Instagram post detailing the damage done to its studio.

“Sadly, early this morning at the studio there was a fire that closed the studio down. No one was hurt within the building, but our beloved Studio is badly damaged. Send us good thoughts. Until we learn more or can make a new path, the studio is closed.”

The cause of the fire is unclear, but there were no injuries reported, and the fire was deemed under control by 5:34 a.m. We’ll provide updates if and when we learn more.
