Velvet Cowboy, a new bar from the team behind Jacob’s Pickles, opens on the Upper West Side on Tuesday, with a concept inspired by the American Southwest and the 1970s.

The bar is at 509 Amsterdam Avenue (between 84th and 85th streets), in the longtime home of Jacob’s Pickles. Jacob’s Pickles has since moved to a much larger space at 680 Columbus Avenue (between 93rd and 94th streets). Both are run by Jacob Hadjigeorgis’s Pickle Hospitality Group. The bar pays homage to desert landscapes, roadside bars, old motels and vintage Americana, according to its Resy listing. “Dust off your boots, grab your favorite partner, and get ready to throw back a few, and ride ’till the sun comes up!” the bar wrote when it announced the opening.
The cocktail menu has riffs on classics like the Margarita and Boulevardier, plus original drinks. Every food item costs $5, and the dishes are meant for sharing. The Infatuation notes that the drinks include a julep made with sassafras and an absinthe drink called the Dead Man Walking. It also reported that the food includes Texas chili, Frito pie, and the bar’s own take on a McRib.
The first available reservations are for Thursday, Oct. 1, and they’re only for the cocktail lounge in the back. “Seats are limited so we ask that all reservations enjoy a 90 minute experience,” the listing reads. “Want to keep the rodeo going? Our front saloon is always open for walk ins and [is] the perfect place to grab your next cocktail!” After 6 p.m., everyone entering has to be 21 or older with a valid ID.
Hadjigeorgis founded Pickle Hospitality Group in 2011 with Jacob’s Pickles. The group later added Maison Pickle and Tiki Chick, as well as Lucky Pickle Dumpling Co., though that one closed in 2021.
