The NYC Department of Transportation’s parking meter fare hikes went into effect this Monday, with prices rising across the city, which has been divided into six zones.
South of 96th street, the Upper West Side falls into Zone M2, along with Broadway up to 106th street and Columbus up to 100th. This area has seen fares rise from $4.00 for the first hour and $6.75 for the second to $5.00 and $8.25, respectively.
Above that is Zone M3, which covers Amsterdam from 96th-110th, Broadway from 106th to 115th and Columbus from 104th to 110th. There, fares have risen from $2.50 for the first hour and $4.00 for the second to $3.00 and $5.00, respectively.
Lastly, you have Zone 3 (as opposed to Zone M3) which covers pretty much everywhere above 110th. There, fares have risen from from $1.25 for the first hour and $2.00 for the second to $1.50 and $2.50.
Private drivers aren’t the only ones getting hit as commercial rates are rising too. Across the Upper West Side South of 96th Street, meter fares will be rising from $5.00, $6.00, and $7.00 for hours one, two and three to $6.00, $9.00 and $12.00. Above that, they’re in the clear.

While the current increases are in Manhattan, the other boroughs will be getting hit too. Fare increases will be going into effect in Queens on 10/27, Brooklyn on 11/9, The Bronx on 11/22, and last but not least, Staten Island on 11/28.
For a full list of zone increases, including those in lower Manhattan and the other boroughs, you can view the DOT Website or check out the metered parking map of the city.
The parking meter revenue will go to the city’s general fund.
These UWS rate hikes were first reported by Patch.
Makes a lot of sense to me. If you want to get around, it should be a lot cheaper to take public transit than a car.
Nick,
You’re assuming those who park at meters are just using the parking space to “get around [Manhattan]”.
They’re often business owners delivering goods to a shop/bar they own. They then work the shift many times.
Some times it’s a plumber or electrician on a service call, and he parks in a metered spot for a few hours, because that’s all he can find.
Watch for the price of pizza at independent shops to increase on the UWS.
Those shops’ owners use personal vehicles to stock their restaurants with flour, etc.
And they often park in metered zones while they run the shop for a shift.
I love this— raise the prices of all the cars! We don’t want cars in the neighborhood so go ahead and tow them charge them and make it difficult to park their cars in our streets. It’s not yours it belongs to all of us! We want more luxury condos in our neighborhood and raising prices is good for our luxury real estate market! Keep raising!!! I love this!!!
If I gotta take the nasty subway so will you— keep raising prices! They can afford it. We want more luxury in manhattan
You wanna play you gotta pay!!!
