The spackling is done, the bins are built, and the vinyl is about to hit the floor on Amsterdam Avenue.

Sweet Peanut Records, the independent shop first announced in May, is officially opening for business on Saturday, July 18, from noon to 8 p.m. at 463 Amsterdam Avenue, between West 82nd and 83rd streets. The space was most recently home to Modern Day Optx.

The opening-day festivities will include raffles, music, and more, according to owner Hunter Brammer. “Come dig through the bins, try on some merch, or tell us about your favorite obscure band that’s missing from the shop,” Brammer said in a message to ILTUWS.

Brammer, 32, spent a decade in wealth management before trading finance for a passion project on the Upper West Side. He moved to the neighborhood from Washington, D.C. five years ago and is originally from North Carolina.

The store will stock mostly vinyl alongside some CDs and cassettes, both new and used. Brammer has said he plans to host listening parties for new releases and bring in speakers to break down historically significant records and artists, with couch seating and a “cleaner, brighter, more organized” feel meant to keep people hanging around.

He also plans to sell online through his own website, Discogs, and Whatnot, where he expects to run occasional live auction-style shows.

The shop can be found on Instagram at @sweetpeanutrec.
