Target has opened its second Upper West Side location at 795 Columbus Avenue at 98th Street, part of the Columbus Square Complex which stretches from 97th to 100th Streets.
It was first announced that the chain retailer would be increasing its UWS presence a little over a year ago (which is somewhat impressive, considering that Target announced its Columbus Circle store in October 2018 and didn’t open until about two years later).

The previous tenant at 795 Columbus Ave was Modell’s, which last year declared bankruptcy, liquidated its stores and was acquired by Retail Ecommerce Ventures which pivoted the retail chain into an online store. Modell’s had another location at 350 Amsterdam Avenue, between 76th and 77th Streets.

Target has signed a 15 year lease for its new space, which measures approximately 22,000 square feet and includes “Apparel and accessories for the whole family; home décor and essentials; an assortment of health, personal care and beauty products; grocery selection, including fresh produce, grab-and-go items, snacks and meal solutions.” A CVS Pharmacy is also opening soon within the store.

Store hours are Monday-Friday from 7am-10pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 8am-10pm, and a grand opening will take place on Sunday, August 15. A Target spokesperson tells us the new store will be giving away 1,000 reusable bags at the grand opening on Sunday.
Target has opened another new store at 602 West 181st Street in Washington Heights, and between the two estimates that it will hire 200 people.
Target now has 11 stores in Manhattan, 90 in the greater NYC area, and more than 1,900 nationwide.

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed ridiculous prices at Manhattan-based Targets? I always thought the attraction was “lots of stuff, most of which you don’t eat, wear or need but, hey, you can’t beat the prices.” I’ve noticed, at least at the Target at 61st Street & B’way much higher prices for food than Fairway; essentially Whole Food prices for A&P/Gristedes-level produce. Can’t tell if they’re trying to cover commercial rents that are through the roof or some market research genius told them “It’s Manhattan; they used to being chiseled.” I couldn’t bring myself to pay such high prices. Shame on them.
I was so happy ( I don’t have to go to NJ anymore) when Hell’s kitchen store opened. But suprise, I have noticed on items which I buy regularly @ Target that NJ stores have lower prices. One explanation NYC rent.
But Faiway ( stinky smells all the time) is the most expensive store on UWS, some products are cheaper @ next door Citarella.
But the most affordable is Whole foods, hands down.
It’s just you. The prices are much cheaper overall than any grocery store on the UWS.
Manhattan is no place for giant chain stores. How many small, locally owned stores were razed to make room for the Columbus Square Complex? Target and others did the same thing on 14th St. 20 stores – gone. It stinks.

There was a tennis court (!) on that block where the target, Home Goods, etc is now. So the answer is No locally owned stores were razed here. Take your complaints elsewhere
Take away the price point and they won’t be hitting the bullseye.
