Since 2004, the JCC on the Upper West Side has celebrated the Jewish holiday of Shavuot with The Paul Feig z”l Tikkun Leil Shavuot, opening its doors to thousands of people for a free night of study, music, art, celebration, conversation, deep thought…and cheesecake. Celebrate in person all night long, from 9 pm on Thursday, May 21, to 5 am on Friday, May 22.
There are over 70 sessions for you to drop in on during this all-night event. Highlights include sessions with NYT bestselling cookbook author Jake Cohen, YouTuber and blogger Frieda Vizel, and beloved rabbis including Rabbi Elliot Cosgrove, Rabbi Jeremy Kalmanofsky, and Rabbi Rachel Ain; activities including paint and sip, bracelet making, and mezuzah decorating; cine-concert with live original music composed and performed by klezmer violinist Alicia Svigals and silent film pianist Donald Sosin and more musical performances by MusicTalks; and so much more.
This year’s programs cover a range of topics appealing to audiences of all backgrounds, including explorations of contemporary issues of American Judaism and American-Israeli relations. A full track will run all night with sessions sponsored by the World Zionist Organization, titled “Zionism, Peoplehood, and Politics.” The Tikkun will begin on the JCC rooftop with an opening song circle at 9 pm and close with a daybreak ritual at 5 am.
Shavuot commemorates G-d’s revelation and the Jewish people’s receiving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. Today, many Jews around the world celebrate this holiday by staying up all night and studying Torah, but the joy of learning doesn’t have to end when the holiday does. Join the JCC’s Tikkun partner, the Simchat Torah Challenge, a community of over 40,000 Jews reading one Torah portion each week. Whether you’re just beginning or have been learning for years, you’ll connect with the wisdom that has guided our people for generations.
Tikkun Leil Shavuot at the JCC honors the memory of Paul Feig z”l, who died in a car accident in 1998. Paul was the brother of longtime JCC board member and board chair emeritus Jeff Feig.
The JCC invites you to stay an hour, two, or all night long for this Upper West Side Shavuot celebration. Come for the revelation, stay for the cheesecake! No registration necessary.
