Much to the chagrin of its loyal following, a beloved Upper West Side Irish pub may soon be closing for good.

St. James Gate at 441 Amsterdam Avenue (and West 81st Street) will close on or by December 20, a restaurant employee confirmed to ILTUWS. “The regulars are super upset,” a patron and our tipster told us.

In an era when neighborhood bars and restaurants come and go quickly, St. James Gate has held steady for 17 years. The pub first opened in 2007 and has been a mainstay of the Upper West Side with its friendly staff and authentic Irish atmosphere. The menu includes odes to the homeland through dishes like Kelly’s Shepherd’s Pie, Celtic Onion Soup, and the Full Irish Breakfast.

The seasonal paintings on the front window and consistent live musical or comedic performances have helped St. James Gate draw a crowd of devoted regular patrons. The bar’s closing will surely send ripples through the community.

We have reached out to the management at St. James Gate and will update this article with more information once we have it.

Prior to St. James Gate, the space at 441 Amsterdam Avenue housed Louie’s Westside Cafe, where a scene from You’ve Got Mail with Meg Ryan and Greg Kinnear was filmed.
