Signage for a popular Italian sandwich shop called Panineria is up at 616 Amsterdam Avenue (between 89th and 90th streets). The space, right next to Chick Chick, was previously home to an Edible Arrangements.

The family-owned eatery operates two other locations — one in Greenwich Village at 9 East 8th Street, and another on the Upper East Side at 322 East 81st Street, which opened in early 2024.

Founded by Naples native Mario Pesce, Panineria takes inspiration from his father’s sandwich shop back home. The business is a true family affair, with Pesce’s partner, uncle, and brother all helping to run operations. The family’s culinary roots run deep: Pesce’s great uncle, Domenico Magliulo, owns Buon’Italia in Chelsea Market, and Magliulo’s late brother, Tony May, was the restaurateur behind acclaimed spots including San Domenico.

Panineria is known for its fresh-cut Italian meats and cheeses — also sold by the pound — and for sandwiches made on house-baked baguettes and ciabatta. Guests can build their own creations or pick from signature combinations, including a rotating sandwich of the month. The menu also includes salads, pastas, soups, and Italian desserts like bomboloni, cannoli, and tiramisu.

The Upper East Side and downtown locations both have strong Google review scores of 4.8 out of 5 stars, with a lot of love shown for its meatball sandwiches and light and airy ciabatta.

According to its website, Panineria aims to serve “the best Italian sandwiches in New York” with fresh, organic ingredients and options for meat lovers, vegetarians, and vegans alike.

We’ve reached out to the business to ask when the Amsterdam Avenue location is expected to open.
