A celebrity eagle died after getting struck by a vehicle on Monday, according to a popular birdwatching account.
“We received some sad news, that beloved Rover the Bald Eagle died today from being struck by a vehicle on the Henry Hudson Parkway while he was attempting to scavenge a small mammal,” Manhattan Bird Alert shared Monday on X (formerly Twitter).
Rover was born in 2018 and has been spotted flying over parts of Brooklyn and Manhattan many times over the years. He was most recently seen in January at the Reservoir in Central Park.
Welcome back to one of Central Park’s great celebrity birds! Rover the Bald Eagle was seen at the Reservoir this morning after famously hunting gulls there in January 2022 (photo). As long as some ice remains, Rover may continue visiting. ? pic.twitter.com/AHqWlSRQcx

“First saw him in Feb 2022. He took my breath away,” wrote one person in the comments. “Saw him 3 more times on the reservoir and again a few weeks ago. He brought me so much joy. My heart is broken.”
Ugh. Heartbreaking to read this today.
Is it an ‘accident’ if the vehicle was recklessly speeding?
You were there?
Whether it was recklessly speeding or not, the public has a right to know what the vehicle was doing up there
Pretty sure the car was driving. On the road.
