Michael Trenk, co-owner of Prohibition and Baylander Steel Beach, is taking over a former Pinkberry space to open up a bowl and smoothie shop, which he tells us should be opening early next year.

Pinkberry closed its location at 2041 Broadway (between 70th and 71st streets) late last month. They were there since 2007.

Trenk tells us he’ll be opening a Pure Green franchise in the space, and it’s serendipitous that this location opened up–he actually lived in an apartment above the storefront for 22 years and had always hoped to open a business on the block. He tells us he’s excited to help revitalize the street following the recent closures of both Pinkberry and Starbucks.

Pure Green–which offers acai bowls, smoothies and cold-pressed juices–was founded in NYC back in 2014. It’s now a national brand with over 70 locations around the country, including several in Brooklyn along with a popup location at the Harry’s Table in Waterline Square (though, as we reported recently, the food hall is expected to close its doors soon).

Michael Cecchini, VP of Franchise Operations at Pure Green, spoke with us a bit about the company’s quality control process. Two things he stressed are that their cold-pressed juices are developed in consultation with dietitians they’ve partnered with over the years, and that all supplement partners undergo testing for heavy metals and other potentially harmful substances. In addition, he tells us they don’t use scoopable acai because it comes with added sugars and can potentially be contaminated. Also, they don’t use ice in their smoothies (though he ensured us they are delivered cold, as the fruits are frozen).

If the name sounds familiar, there’s actually a smoke shop called Pure Green located at 128 West 72nd Street (though it appears to be temporarily closed).

We’ll provide an update once Pure Green gets closer to its opening date.
