On Tuesday evening, Sybil Young of the Parks Department presented design plans for the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument to Community Board 7.

The goals of the project are to restore the monument along with its surrounding terraces and associated structures; make all exterior levels ADA accessible; and to install “safe, secure, easy to maintain” lighting that “elevates the appearance of the monument’s facade at night.”
Schematics for the $62.3 million restoration project – which the mayor’s office first revealed in early 2023 – have been “approved internally at Parks and is now going through review by the community board and external regulatory agencies for comment and approval,” according to the Parks Dept’s capital project tracker. The project completion date is currently listed as June 2025.

Following the presentation, Community Board 7 approved the resolution. The Parks Department has a public hearing with the Landmarks Preservation Committee on June 11.
They better not be taking our the buried cannon balls!!!!!
Looks like none of the fancy design elements of the original will be replicated. Thats a shame.
All this money for the renovation, and no money to keep the libraries open on Sunday. That is very sad.
Oh Violet, does that make you Blue?
