New Year’s Eve Stabbing on Amsterdam Ave

A 28-year-old man was stabbed on New Year’s Eve at the intersection of West 79th Street and Amsterdam Avenue. The suspect fled in a red car and no arrests have been made while an NYPD investigation is ongoing. The victim was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital.

At around 9 p.m. on Sunday, a man who appeared to be a food delivery driver, equipped with a bike and backpack, could be heard screaming before falling to the ground due to his wound. He lost significant blood before another man wrapped his wound to help stop the bleeding. Multiple police cars arrived before an ambulance arrived at 407 Amsterdam Ave near Insomnia Cookies.

“On 12/31/23 at 9:02pm in front of 407 Amsterdam Avenue a 28 year old male sustained a laceration from an unknown male suspect who fled the scene prior to police arrival. The victim was transported to St Luke’s Hospital. There are no arrests and the investigation is ongoing,” the NYPD’s Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Public Information spokesperson told ILTUWS in an emailed statement.

The New York City 911 account on X (formerly Twitter) posted about the incident at 9:15 p.m., adding the victim was expected to live.

“Confirmed assault w/ a knife, aided not likely. Suspect is a m/w, fled on W 79th St in a red vehicle,” reads the post.

One X user who was at the scene posted a photo of the man lying on the ground with significant blood loss visible and police gathered. “Was standing near the mom whose son helped stop the bleeding …hope he is okay,” reads the post.

It is not clear if there was any motive, or if the suspect had any prior engagement with the victim before the stabbing occurred.
