A New Jersey-based gyro joint has locked down a prime corner recently home to a popular counter-service lunch spot.
The Gyro Project, which appears to be on a rapid growth path, will be opening at the end of February or beginning of March at 2062 Broadway (on the southeast corner of 71st Street), which until very recently was home to Cafe Metro. Cafe Metro opened in 2019, replacing Tasty Cafe, a similar counter-service lunch place with items like salads, sandwiches and soups.

According to their IG page, they’re also prepping to open locations at Newark Penn Station and in Kips Bay (respectively slated for February 4 and April 22). The Gyro Project’s original Fort Lee, NJ restaurant opened in 2023.
The menu includes an array of pitas and bowls, salads and platters, Greek desserts including frozen Greek yogurt and Loukoumades, and specialty fries with ingredients like oregano and crumbled feta.

Looks intriguing … though I’m still missing Bagel Nosh.
As a Greek American and co-leader of the West 71st Street Block Association, I am thrilled! If done properly, it will offer delicious affordable food.
We will welcome them and wish them well.
Twelve bucks for a gyro??? Jeeze, I remember people bellyaching when Gyro II down by Penn Station raised their price to $8. And theirs was the best in town! No thank you.
