“School may be out for summer, but a new District 75 elementary program is coming to P.S. M226 at 1972 Broadway, between West 66th and 67th Streets, and will launch in September for the 2025–2026 school year.”

Six new kindergarten sections, serving roughly 36 to 48 students, are set to begin in September 2025 with the start of the new academic year. “In addition, the Department of Education (DOE) is planning to add general education early childhood classes at the same site—1972 Broadway—in the 2026–2027 school year,” wrote Councilmember Gale Brewer, who noted that the newly renovated space was ready to go but “has been vacant—and the Department of Education claimed that not enough demand existed to open it for students.”
Enrollment for elementary school students attending a District 75 (Special Ed) program in Manhattan increased by approximately 23%, according to Brewer. “And in School District 3 (our district) specifically, the number of elementary students attending a District 75 program increased by about 8%.”
“We are delighted to open a new District 75 elementary program at P.S. M226, an existing D75 school, for the 2025–26 school year,” wrote a Department of Education (DOE) spokesperson in an email to ILTUWS. “Under the Adams administration, we are working to provide our children with the world-class education they deserve, right in their community.” They also informed us that the program will feature specialized classroom settings with 6:1:1 and 8:1:1 ratios (student: teacher: paraprofessional), based on students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Small entry on ground floor, then second, third and fourth floors.
The DOE added that beginning in the 2026–27 school year, New York City Public Schools plan to expand the site by adding district general education early childhood classes alongside the District 75 program.
Brewer tells us that nearly 100 families with children turning four between 2025 and 2028 have completed a survey expressing interest in sending their children to the new District 75 school.

I miss the Century 21, but an elementary school is much better than a vacant building!
That is incredibly expensive space.
Isn’t that directly across from the new 100-story residential complex that’s going in where the old ABC studios used to be? Traffic will be lovely.
