The collaboration marks the 40th anniversary of MTA Arts & Design and takes its cue from “For Want of a Nail,” the station’s sprawling mixed-media installation created in partnership with museum staff and neighborhood residents and installed in 2000.

The designs, which mirror the station’s mosaics and sculptural details, appear on a range of apparel and accessories for adults and children, including T-shirts, a fleece sweatshirt, a tote, backpack, water bottle, hat, magnets, stickers, and collectible pins. Items are being sold exclusively through the American Museum of Natural History gift shop and its online store while supplies last.

Museum and MTA officials pointed to the 81st Street station’s long-standing role as an extension of the museum experience, with its artwork reflecting the institution’s scientific collections and exhibitions. The MTA says the partnership is the first in what it hopes will be a series of location-based collaborations with major New York cultural institutions, both to highlight station art and to bring in additional revenue through merchandise licensing.
