Following the attempted rape of a sunbather in Central Park last month, the NYPD has installed additional surveillance cameras in and around the park, Pix11 reports.

It isn’t clear where exactly the cameras have been placed, or how many have been added, but NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Operations Kaz Daughtry said that the cameras are permanent and that there are “a lot” of them.
The suspect in the June 24 attempted rape incident–43-year-old Jermaine Longmire–was arrested on July 3 after a massive police hunt involving NYPD-issued drones and the release of a police sketch. He has since been indicted for the assault, which took place in the Great Hill area at West Drive and West 104th Street, where he targeted a 21-year-old woman.
The same man was arrested on June 27 on charges of forcible touching stemming from a separate incident in which he victimized a 27-year-old woman standing on a southbound A train platform.

“As alleged, Jermaine Longmire attempted to rape a woman in Central Park while she was sunbathing last month. Our parks should be a place where New Yorkers can relax without fearing for their safety, and this alleged conduct will not be tolerated,” District Attorney Alvin Bragg said as his office announced Longmire’s indictment. “Our Special Victims Division has the resources to both hold offenders accountable and support survivors as they heal; please call us at 212-335-9373.”

The NY Post reports that there had been “at least 18 reported robberies” in Central Park by April 30, “compared [to] four in the same period in 2023, according to the NYPD.” At that time, police officials committed to increasing their presence in Central Park following four reported robberies in just three days.
Must be an election year.
Presumably the installation of the additional cameras has been noted by regular parkgoers.
Leave all the criminals in jail where they belong. We would need a lot less cameras.
