Film at Lincoln Center’s free outdoor movie series is back at Hearst Plaza next month, running July 9 through 18, and this year every film on the schedule shares one theme: soccer.

Dubbed “Penalty Flicks,” the series folds into World at Play at Lincoln Center, a campus-wide celebration of the global spirit of the game and where it crosses paths with the arts — timed to a summer when World Cup fever is about to grip the city. Six films round out the lineup, each one kicking off at 8 p.m.Here’s the full slate:
- Pelé — Thursday, July 9. The archival-rich documentary tracing the Brazilian legend’s rise to three World Cup titles.
- Offside — Tuesday, July 14. Jafar Panahi’s sharp, funny portrait of women trying to sneak into a men’s-only stadium during a World Cup qualifier in Iran.
- Diamantino — Wednesday, July 15. A gleefully strange NYFF56 pick about a soccer superstar who flees the spotlight, skewering Brexit and genetic science along the way.
- Shaolin Soccer — Thursday, July 16. Stephen Chow’s cult-favorite mashup of kung fu and the pitch.
- Infinite Football — Friday, July 17. Corneliu Porumboiu’s dryly hilarious documentary about a bureaucrat determined to rewrite the rules of the sport.
- She’s the Man — Saturday, July 18. The millennial rom-com starring Amanda Bynes and Channing Tatum, loosely lifted from Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night.”

There’s a bonus for film buffs, too: stop by the FLC table near the entrance at any screening and you can enter to win a pair of Opening Night tickets to the 64th New York Film Festival this fall. It’s one entry per person per screening, and the winner gets notified by July 24.
Getting in is easy, with two routes. The simplest is general admission — first-come, first-served, no reservation, just show up. More than half the venue’s capacity is always held for the GA line. The other option is a free Fast Track reservation, which gives priority entry and can be booked through Lincoln Center’s website. Those reservations open every Monday at noon for that week’s screenings, so a film playing later in the week can be locked in only a day or two ahead. Fast Track holders keep their priority until 10 minutes before showtime, though admission still isn’t guaranteed, so arriving about an hour early is the safe bet. Lincoln Center members skip the reservation entirely and get automatic Fast Track access.

A few logistics worth knowing before you go. The entrance sits on the south side of Hearst Plaza, between the Metropolitan Opera House and Barclays Grove, and gates open roughly 30 minutes before each showtime. Lincoln Center hands out high-fidelity headphones to borrow for the night — your own earbuds won’t connect, so don’t bother. Outside food and drink isn’t permitted, but concessions are available on campus, and there’s a refillable water station in the David Geffen Hall lobby. Pets stay home; service animals are welcome.
