Several of our readers reached out to us yesterday with news that Le Pain Quotidien would be closing 12 of its NYC stores – including the location at 50 West 72nd Street.
One reader who spoke to an employee at this location was told that Tuesday, March 17th was the last day Le Pain would be open on 72nd Street.
Another reader saw this sign in the store window on Tuesday:
However, the same reader tells us that on Wednesday, March 18th, a new sign went up – stating that the store closure was because of the virus.
It seems like Le Pain was quick to adapt to the new situation with the corona virus scare. Within the last few days, photos of a sandwich board with sanitizer and gloves attached to it were taken outside the 72nd Street location.
We reached out to Le Pain Quotidien for comment and will provide an update if and when they get back to us.

closing for good or just until this is over?
They said they are closing 12 locations for good. My hubby went in there to ask. So sad, we really liked that place on 72nd.
They opened 20 years ago with the communal tables so that people who knew or didn’t know each other could sit together and talk over a meal. With the invention of cell phones and other electronics, nobody talks to each other, even people who know each other sit there with their faces in their phones. It was a great thought to have the tables and I hope after this health crisis we all are suffering through, people appreciate each other, don’t take each other for granted and start talking to each other again.
Let me also say it’s funny how they want to act like they care about their employees, but firing all of them at once because they don’t want to pay them their legal sick days and PTO. Making them come in to clean their store and letting them go as laid offs just for the next day to terminate all their staff but posting an ad on indeed right away for hiring. employees that have been with the company for ages breaking their back to get LPQ where is at today, in the middle of pandemic how inhumane can a company be?
I can’t be more agree with this point of view. I never going to buy a coffee in that place no more. Where is the care for humanity? So sad.
They’ve been crap all along to their employees.

Hardly a loss – I always thought this was the most over-priced, over-rated chain restaurant….$8.95 for a soft-boiled egg? REALLY?! And on top of that, the service was crap.
