“This is not a drill,” reads one of the window signs at Laytner’s Linen & Home, an Upper West Side fixture since 1961. But this is also not the first time Laytner’s ownership has announced an impending store closure to the public.

Laytners Linens is Closing

A sign posted in Laytner’s window in June 2018.

When we shared an image of the new signage on Instagram, there was quite a bit of doubt.

“They’re legends for saying they’ve been going out of business for the past 20 years,” wrote @danizoldan, owner of Stand Up New York.

“They’ve had more final curtain calls than the rolling stones have had farewell tours,” wrote comic @petestegemeyer.

“I’m starting to think this is marketing strategy to call attention and make them sell more,” wrote another user with a private profile. “I’ve been living in the neighborhood for almost 20 years and every year I see them saying they are going out of business.”

“Interesting, and perhaps gratifying, that so many folks don’t believe our family is closing Laytner’s Linen & Home,” Mel Laytner wrote to ILTUWS. “Truth is, we did think we were closing our doors in 2018. Why we didn’t is complicated.” Mel shared a post about the closing on Facebook.

A store associate also told us September 30 would be Laytner’s last day. So, if you think there’s a chance this might actually be the case — and you’re in need of linens and things — maybe go “stock up forever,” as another sign suggests.
