The Upper West Side’s sandwich landscape just got a little more crowded. La Panineria, an Italian shop known for its fresh-cut meats, house-baked breads and old-school family pedigree, has opened a new location at 616 Amsterdam Avenue, just off the corner of West 89th Street. The space was previously home to an Edible Arrangements.

This is the brand’s third storefront in New York City and its first in the neighborhood. Owner Mario Pesce, a Naples native, opened La Panineria’s original East 8th Street shop in 2014. A decade later, the business continues to grow, most recently with a Upper East Side outpost that debuted in February 2024.Pesce has described La Panineria as a fulfillment of a family dream—his father ran a panineria in Italy, and several relatives help operate the NYC locations. The family food lineage runs deep: Pesce’s great-uncle owns Buon’Italia in Chelsea Market, and another relative, the late Tony May, was behind several acclaimed New York restaurants.
At the new UWS shop, customers can expect the same lineup that helped build a loyal following downtown and on the east side: baguettes and ciabatta baked in-house, Italian meats and cheeses sliced to order, and the option to customize or choose from the shop’s roster of signature combinations. The menu also includes salads, soups, pasta dishes, and a selection of Italian pastries like bombolone, cannoli, and tiramisu.
