Live Music on the Upper West Side
The vibe at Hostelling International is always friendly, from the crowd to the bands to the staff. They create an environment that’s very conducive to enjoying some good music and this comes across in the performances that they host. Kicking things off at 4:30 will be singer Taylor Simone. Her music draws on jazz, soul, R&B, pop and hip-hop topped off with her sultry vocals. Sun Looks Down will follow, with their unique sound and talented instrumentation that seems to draw on Radiohead as much as Charles Mingus and Lee Scratch Perry. Next up will be indie-rockers Phonoscenes followed by Bitchen Kitchen, who refer to themselves as “one cookin’ soul band!”. Hopefully those in attendance will boogy to what they’re cooking up. Gabriel Garzon Montano is slated to hit at 7:40 with his neo-soul croon and grooving R&B-tinged songs. New York City’s very own BAAM! will close out this fine day of music performing their very own repertoire of original music which is steeped in rock n roll, and funk n’ soul. With their full horn section blowing away over a solid beat and some good ol’ reverbed guitars, this should be a wonderful climax to a fun day of music in a great setting.
