Saw the same hawk (or similar) eating a pigeon in Central Park – near the Seneca Village site by 85th street.
saw a hawk on 87/west end eating a pigeon too
I wish they were eating rats.
I certainly don’t — rodenticides (largely anticoagulants) accumulate in the bodies of the rats, mice, voles and squirrels who take days after exposure to die. When birds of prey eat them, they often fall victim to secondary poisoning (whereby they hemorrhage internally in horrific fashion). Such pesticides are heavily implicated in the declining raptor populations around the world. As the smallest american falcons, kestrels are particularly vulnerable. No need to wish such cruelty on these majestic yet vulnerable creatures just because we consider rodents a nuisance.
