Going to Goods For The Study: The New Stationery Store Inside The Ansonia

Goods for the Study

Back when Babe Ruth lived at the Ansonia, Goods for the Study—the new stationery store inside the iconic residence at 2105 Broadway—would have been the place to grab a pen for his autograph if you spotted him outside. ILTUWS took a trip over to check out the brand’s third location, which opened on Saturday, January 25. Goods for the Study first launched in Nolita on Mulberry Street in 2013.

Previously home to Loehmann’s, a Brooklyn-based department store that went bankrupt in 2013 and closed all locations—including this one—after a 2014 liquidation sale, the space sat vacant for over a decade before Goods for the Study moved in. It seemed customers were making up for lost time, as the store was bustling with activity when we visited on Monday, January 27, with Lana Del Rey’s Venice Bitch playing over the sound system. (Other parts of the former Loehmann’s storefront are now occupied by Sephora and a second-floor Mount Sinai Doctors’ office.)

Goods for the Study makes great use of its space, utilizing every nook and cranny to showcase an array of notebooks, greeting cards, and office supplies. Writing utensils appeared to be the main attraction, with an entire corner dedicated to them, where you could buy single pens by design, all neatly arranged in jars—sparing you from having to buy whole packs. The selection ranged from the Craft Design Multi-Pen for $19.95 to the Pilot Frixion erasable pen for $7.95.

In a March 2024 story, Curbed named Goods for the Study one of “The Best Stationery Stores in New York” for offering “every pen imaginable.” The publication highlighted the pen wall at their Nolita location—similar to what we saw here—describing it as “stocked with a rainbow of Le Pens and Kaweco Sport fountain pens and many, many others,” making it a favorite among authors, calligraphers, and artists. Calligrapher and engraver Ranisha Singh complimented the store’s knowledgeable staff and selection as her draw there. You can test out the pens on a notebook they have laid out, as well.

It seems like Goods for the Study has a notebook for any occasion. From daily planners to parallel planners to a hand-sized spiral book titled Things I Am Looking Forward To: A Yearlong Record of Reasons to Keep Going, the store has an aura of positive energy, heightened by a spectrum of colors in its products and wall art. They also have classic Moleskine notebooks in the back—a staple I’ve been using since high school.

Similar to the Lana Del Rey song we heard walking in, they offer some cheeky items, like this ‘F*cking Ace’ notebook.

Then there are these cute pen cases shaped like pandas, cats, raccoons, and brown bears ($21.95), placed next to tea-scented erasers to bring out the kid in you. There’s something for everyone.

There’s a slew of greeting cards to choose from, too, along with paper clips, thumbtacks, candles, and some staples that resemble a whale. This is the kind of place where you can have fun walking around to see what catches your eye in the moment or what might make a nice gift down the road. A wonderful addition to the neighborhood, and we look forward to returning soon.

Goods for the Study is open daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
