Governor Cuomo released a new report on August 3, stating that another 19 bars in New York State have faced liquor license suspensions for “egregious violations of pandemic-related Executive Orders.”
Just days after we learned about Hi Life Bar & Grill’s liquor license suspension, George Keeley, located at 485 Amsterdam Avenue (between 83rd and 84th Streets), has been added to the list.
The investigation took place on July 30. The report states that investigators “observed twelve patrons standing and congregating around high top tables outside the bar with alcohol and with just one basket of popcorn on the table.”
So, even though they were serving food, it sounds like it wasn’t enough food for 12 people …
This is unfortunate. George Keeley is at the very top of our list of best bars on the UWS.

The new report states that between Friday and Sunday, over three-thousand compliance checks were conducted.
As of now, a total of 596 charges have been filed.
Bars which don’t receive liquor license suspensions can still face fines of up to $10,000 for violations. In addition, Cuomo’s “Three Strikes and You’re Closed” initiative states that establishments which receive three violations will be closed.
We’ve reached out to George Keeley for comment.
The other Manhattan bars which have faced liquor license suspensions are:
- Bettolona at 3143 Broadway
- Posh at 405 West 51st Street
- Lasagna Restaurant at 196 8th Avenue
- Made in Mexico at 3950 10th Avenue
- Pazza Notte at 1375A Avenue of the Americas
- Shinsen at 44 Bowery
- Amata at 209 15 East 56th Street
This is a joke.
You all think Cuomo wants to save NY…think again.
Is there any way to remove Cuomo from power before the next election? He’s going to completely destroy this city before 2022.
They are also not allowed to have standing bar tables. It’s supposed to be all seated, to keep people from roaming around and getting too close to others, and yes the law says food, not just drinks and popcorn.
Says the guy that likely made a phone call on them This is going to be it for Keeleys. Such a shame. They don’t have enough space for sidewalk tables and bus stop prevents street tables. Ugh. There won’t be any affordable eating or drinking in our UWS soon. I’m devastated to hear this.
And no, it wasn’t law, at all. This is pure Cuomo whimsy and preference.. . . In Albany! ! !
Why do we even need bars open during a pandemic? Are people so ignorant and immature that they need to go and hang out to get liquored up when others are dropping dead by the hundreds of thousands? Get a grip people!
Stay in your safe space in the fetal position and let the rest of us live our lives. If you don’t like it, call the deblasio tattle line
After 60+ years I left the city because of selfish people like you and I’m in a real safe place where neighbors look out for each other. No fetal position for me upstate in nature’s bounty. NYC used to be inhabited with people who were smart and community minded. I’ve seen many mayors come and go and lucky for you De Blasio is there and not Giuliani during a time like this. Better times are ahead for some of us come November.
Another liberal trying to impose their sick, evil view of the world on freedom loving Citizens.
DeBlasio and Cuomo are horrible.
