Toshiko Akiyoshi Trio

September 3, 7.30pm & 9.30pm

The Toshiko Akiyoshi Trio is composed by bassist Steve Whipple, drummer Tim Horner, and pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi. The trio will perform for one special night as part of the “Lessons from Our Masters” series. The series aims to showcase the talents of established artists who are underrated in the music industry. One of the missions of the festival is to also give these artists an opportunity to reach a broader audience. Akiyoshi has been the recipient of various Grammy Awards. She was also named a NEA Jazz Master in 2007 by the U.S. National Endowment of Arts. This is the highest honor any jazz artist can receive. Toshiko is a brilliant pianist who’s also known for composing arrangements that incorporate Japanese sounds. The trio’s performance is bound to be original, innovative, and full of creativity.
