We’ve been made aware that Gary Null’s Uptown Whole Foods, located at 2421 Broadway on the corner of 89th Street, will be closing for good. We received this info from reader Patricia McCann. A staff member confirmed, telling us the last scheduled day is Thursday, August 20.
UPDATE (8/20/2020): A Second Chance For Uptown Whole Foods?
The health food store first opened in 1993 (thanks to several readers who’ve pointed this out).
Gary Null’s Uptown Whole Foods (no relation to the Whole Foods chain) served fruits and vegetables, juices, a wide range of vegan, raw, macrobiotic, organic and gluten-free products, bulk and frozen items, herbs and supplements, and included a section for body care and beauty products.

In addition to the store, Gary Null has his own radio show and has written many books. Through these platforms, he has shared some beliefs which have created a hefty amount of controversy and pushback.
Null has also been known to speak out against vaccinations. Here’s a link to a 2009 video he published on his Youtube channel.
According to his Wikipedia page, “Reactions in the popular press and scholarly community to Null’s claims have been generally negative, and Null along with his publications have been frequently criticized for disseminating misleading information which can negatively affect the public’s understanding of health issues.”
Nevertheless, many will miss Gary Null’s Uptown Whole Foods. While reviews have been extremely mixed over the years, the store had many regular patrons and supporters.
Given the pandemic, I don’t think we need to link to any more BS anti-vaxxer material.
Gary Null’s Uptown Whole Foods has always been such a wonderful store! We have always shopped here at least once a week. It has always carried carefully selected natural brands and truly quality products. It always had certain items that we couldn’t get anywhere else. Our family will miss this place so very much. Both of my kids have memories of being strolled up and down the aisles. And my parents brought me to this store when I was a kid, 35 years ago! I can’t tell you how sad we are to see this place go. It was a real staple of our neighborhood. Thanks to Gary and the staff for all of the good years.
I know I will sadly miss this place. I go there once a week to buy items I can’t buy elsewhere 🙁
This is good news. Gary Null is a dangerous charlatan who should be shut down as much as possible.
I personally built, owned and operated “Uptown Whole Foods” in the 1993. It was an instant success, filling a need for a totally organic and kosher health food supermarket on the Upper West Side. The 2,500 sq..ft. space formerly had been a “Cakemaster” bakery. This Store, my second health food supermarket in Manhattan, became the most successful Health Food operation in the Country. For many New York City residents, it was a Mecca for quality foods and hard to find products at reasonable prices. My staff and I always took pride in providing the community with a healthy and worthwhile food shopping experience. The success of the “Uptown “ store was in some small way a catalyst for the establishment of Health Food aisles in today’s supermarkets. It was a very special time. I’m sorry to see it pass, but glad to have been part of a health food revolution.
Party Cake not Cakemaster
I will miss the store very much. You can take Trader Joe’s and bring back the
small quality markets with interesting products. For some reason everyone wants private label food that is all the same and clothes that all look alike.
I well remember when you opened, as it was such a boon to my family. We had a house account so my kids could stop by for a treat that I was happy for them to be eating. It hasn’t been the same since you sold, but has continued to be a support and will be missed.
The store was a gem, last of a breed of mom and pop stores. Bummer..
Wasn’t Cake Master up on Broadway and about 98th?
I found Gary Null’s Whole Foods to be a really good health organic store. If I needed something last minute I was sure to find it there. It is also conveniently located and it stands apart from Barzini’s and Broadway farm. It’s shame they’re closing.
Why does the author of the article repeat the lies told about Gary Null on Wikipedia which is just a source of paid for propaganda? I don’t appreciate the discrediting of people like Gary who have offered wisdom on natural medicine and empowered people to take control of their health.
Sorry to see it go. Shopped there for 35 yrs. The gentleman that tended the produce for SO long did so w/ much integrity and caring. Huge losses the for UWS health conscious Beings… ??
I agree with Nancy Jensen 100%. I listen to Gary Null every day and it just makes me wiser and healthier all the time. He is a HERO. A voice of sanity, and so hardworking!
Gary Null is a very special guy who knows more about nutrition than anyone I know. His beliefs are always very well sourced and documented. His products are excellent. Will be another loss to the UWS which is in rapid free fall and not the same neighborhood I grew up in, a real shame what is going on today on our streets.
It’s about time
Seems there is some unclear reporting on the history of this place. 1993 or 1966?
I grew up on the westside and knew just about every store on both sides of bway from 100 to 72. Hard to believe I missed Garys store open since 1966…any pictures please..thx
BAD, BAD headline text wwriting. C’mon.
I am sorry (and very sad) to see Uptown Whole Foods go. The staff were always friendly and some had been there for a long time. it was a great place to pop into and also get some items you could not find elsewhere. It also another loss for the immediate neighborhood.
Party Cake was at the location all those years ago.
Who remembers the drug store on bway between 100-101….
