Flying Tiger Copenhagen will be closing all of its US stores by late November, Patch first reported. This includes its Upper West Side location at 424 Columbus Avenue, between 80th and 81st Streets.
The Danish variety and toy chain opened its first store in Copenhagen in 1995, eventually growing to over 950 stores.
Sales are being offered at all locations, and the company stated on its Facebook page that all gift cards must be used by November 20.[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=”16″]
Dear Customers
However, the past 7 months have, for obvious reasons, been a bigger struggle for us than we could have ever imagined, which is why we have made the extremely difficult decision to close all our stores in the United States as of late November.
If you have a gift card, please make sure to use it before 11/20/2020.
We are very sad to close our stores and to say goodbye to our awesome colleagues. We wish them and all of our lovely customers the best!
With Much Love
Flying Tiger Copenhagen

Flying Tiger also has soon-to-close locations on the Upper East Side and in Flatiron.

I am really sorry to read that this wonderful store is closing all their USA. I was just in the West Side store last week where I picked up a few items for myself and my nephews. Fun selection, great prices, lovely staff. Another one bites the dust.
Very sad.
They will be missed. It was such a pleasure to see toys, art supplies, household items, beautifully designed as only Scandinavia can do. And at more than reasonable prices. A very special place.
Sad to learn they are closing. The store was fun, interesting, and always had a really good spirit in the mix of merchandise and the attitude of the store. Hard to pay the rent with those inexpensive items. Need something like Time Out has done for restaurants with small areas for individual businesses . More like a bazaar than. Department store . This playful place ruined me of Mythology, a great store in its time.
I’m so glad that someone else remembers Mythology! Probably my favorite store anywhere, forever (except for bookstores!)!
Yes, we are sorry to hear the news too. Very sad
Oh no! That’s where I buy those lovely tins of sugar cookies.and amusing totes. And cute phone charger wires. And toys for tots. And silly pens. And its the source where I, as @TheMaskedHatter on Instagram, purchase most of my wild and crazy and crazily inexpensive sunglasses. Drat! I was just there yesterday morning.
One of my favorite stores in NYC – the amazing assortment of things – just an extraordinary loss to all New Yorkers — as am event producer I shopped there often. Let’s ask one of the billionaires to save this remarkable chain of stores.
I am literally on the subway enroute to Flying Tiger in Flatiron (so I thought) when I read the bad news!…Was having a pretty good week with the Biden electoral college win and the vaccines but this news has ruined my mood! (Ok, I’m not comparing these 3 events.)…I loved the stationery items, the cookies and the “Royal” shopping bags which I will treasure forever!…I agree that a billionaire should step in and save the stores but, alas, I don’t think it works that way…Farewell Flying Tiger and thanks for the experience!!
. That is a sad sign of the times.
I’m not on the UWS but on Long Island
where I went to the store at the Whitman
Shoppes. I’m glad that I have a collection of their fun greeting cards & shopping bags
They will be missed!
I am very sad to hear this. It was a fun store for my family to visit and be able to afford small gifts/accessories/decor.
I am very sad to hear this! For the past 5 years i have enjoyed this store and made many purchases. It has been my all occasion, birthday and holiday gift GO TO store.I cant believe it. Thank you for bringing the west side so much fun. I guess this is a good reason to consider moving to Denmark.
I will see you before you close.
Carol
Oh, that’s really a shame, as it’s really a fun place filled with treats. Hate losing all these unique places. This virus has really taken it’s toll on our city, as well as lives and livelihoods. Thanks for adding sparkle to the neighborhood.
One of my favorite stores, especially for holiday decor, cheap batteries and whimsical home items.
It is not a small business; it has stores all over Europe so it seems there is no way to save it.
I wish they would have waited this out but maybe they’ll be back!
We moved here last year and this instantly became a family fave….so sad about this
So sad, as a teacher of Special Education students I stocked my classroom store with treasures from this store and they were great motivators for the children. It was affordable and became essential for my work. I’ll miss it greatly!
It was a fun store and I will miss it. I bought art supplies, yoga blocks, Pilates ball, little toys, coloring books, water coloring pencils, mugs, phone case, etc.. they were environmentally conscious and the staff was so friendly. I feel bad for them, loosing work during the holidays.
