For 45 years, Linda Carter Cooper dedicated herself to serving her neighborhood. She was a poll worker, tenant advocate, and a committed member of the Church of St. Matthew and St. Timothy. She also played a key role as a community coordinator at the Board of Elections and was a devoted member of the local Democratic Club, where she championed equality, inclusivity, and justice.

City Councilmember Gale Brewer announced the street co-naming, calling it a celebration of Cooper’s lifelong dedication to the Upper West Side. Brewer highlighted Cooper’s contributions as a tireless advocate who assisted neighbors in need, whether through tenant organizing, civic engagement, or community service.

At a September 2024 Community Board 7 Transportation Committee meeting, where proposals for secondary street names were initially heard, Cooper’s daughter, Teniqua Cooper, who grew up at 150 West 84th Street, described her mother as a “pillar of the community” whose life was defined by “service, resilience, and unwavering commitment.” One of Linda’s most impactful roles was as a tenant organizer, fearlessly confronting slumlords and illegal evictions while educating tenants about their rights. Her work earned her the Good Neighbor Award from Goddard Riverside Community Center in 2022.

The vote to approve the street renaming passed with nine members in favor, none opposed, and one abstention. The designation then required approval from the full Community Board 7, followed by the City Council, and finally, Mayor Eric Adams.

Following the ceremony for Linda Carter Cooper on April 18, attendees are invited to gather at Bodega 88 to continue celebrating Linda Carter Cooper’s enduring legacy.
