Consuelo, a Mexican Restaurant, Opens in the Former Malaysia Grill Space on West 104th Street

Consuelo, the second location of the Hamilton Heights restaurant Cocina Consuelo, has soft-opened at 224 West 104th Street — the space last home to Malaysia Grill, which closed suddenly in July 2024 after roughly 20 years on the block, amid an employee strike over wages. Thanks to Dave Cook at Eating In Translation for the tip.

The original Cocina Consuelo started as a pandemic-era takeout and delivery operation and grew into a supper club known for multi-course Mexican tasting menus. According to the restaurant’s website, the husband-and-wife venture got its start with birria — a traditional dish that takes more than 15 hours to cook — before opening its first storefront at 130 Hamilton Place in August 2024.

The new Upper West Side outpost held its initial soft-opening celebration on May 22 and 23. For now, Consuelo is open Wednesday through Friday from 5 to 10 p.m., with weekend brunch on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the restaurant tell us. The restaurant says it’s walk-ins only at the moment.

When ILTUWS asked whether the Upper West Side location would serve the same menu as the original, the restaurant simply shared its menu “for this week” — a sign the offerings may shift. The current lineup leans into the upscale Mexican cooking the Hamilton Heights spot is known for, with mains like a mole negro with confit duck leg and chilhuacle ($41), a birria bone marrow with braised beef and salsa roja ($37), and branzino with habanero butter and plátano macho ($36). There’s also a filet mignon tataki with chapulines and epazote ($28), smaller plates including flor de calabaza and candy cane beets, and a tres leches for dessert.
