New York City recorded the lowest number of shootings and homicides for the first five months of any year in its history, Mayor Eric Adams and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced in a press release Monday.

According to city data, from January through May 2025, there were 264 shootings and 112 homicides—just below the previous lows of 267 shootings (2018) and 113 homicides (2014 and 2017).

The announcement comes amid broader efforts by the city to reduce gun violence, including the removal of more than 22,000 illegal firearms since the start of the Adams administration. Officials credited “precision policing,” targeted deployment strategies, and multi-agency initiatives as contributing factors.

But on the Upper West Side—where shootings and homicides are relatively rare—the picture is more complex, with several other categories of crime showing notable fluctuations this year compared to last.

20th Precinct

The 20th Precinct, which covers the area south of West 86th Street, reported no murders or shooting incidents so far this year, compared to two shootings during the same period last year. But while violent incidents involving firearms are down, other crimes remain persistent.

  • Rape and UCR rape (defined here) reports increased from 7 to 13.

  • Other sex crimes jumped 166.7%, from 6 to 16 cases.

  • Petit larceny rose 10.3%, with 527 reports so far this year.

  • Felony assaults dropped 43.5%, while robberies fell slightly by 13.9%.

While the mayor and police commissioner highlighted historic lows in shootings and homicides, local data shows that public safety trends vary significantly by neighborhood—and by crime category. On the Upper West Side, theft and assault remain more prevalent concerns than gun violence.

City officials say efforts will continue across all fronts, including through the NYPD’s new Quality of Life Division and the Community Link initiative, which aim to address both major crimes and day-to-day safety issues.
