The Central Park Conservancy is undertaking a significant restoration of the West 85th Street Playground, aiming to revitalize this historic play area while honoring its deep cultural roots within the former Seneca Village site.

Originally constructed in the 1930s as Marginal Playground #16 and later renamed the Abraham and Joseph Spector Playground, the West 85th Street Playground is among the largest in Central Park. Situated within the area that once housed Seneca Village—a predominantly African-American community that existed before the park’s creation—the playground occupies land that was once home to churches, residences, and significant streets. Recognizing this, the Conservancy has engaged with historians, descendants, and community members to ensure the restoration pays homage to the site’s rich history.
Guided by the Conservancy’s Plan for Play initiative–a framework developed in 2011 “for rebuilding and managing the Park’s playgrounds”–the restoration will focus on several key objectives:
- Enhancing the playground’s integration with the surrounding park landscape.
- Improving the variety and quality of play experiences.
- Maximizing accessibility for all users.
- Ensuring compliance with current safety standards.
- Preserving successful elements of the existing design.
- Implementing sustainable design and construction practices.
- Developing innovative solutions for play and community engagement.
Key components of the restoration include new play equipment such as swings and climbers, water play areas, updated benches, improved pavement, a new drinking fountain, and enhanced plantings. The playground’s entrance will be reconfigured to better accommodate gatherings and educational tours related to Seneca Village.

The Conservancy will also replace the perimeter fence with a lower, four-foot-high fence to better integrate the playground with the park’s landscape and provide more space for mature trees.
As of now, the West 85th Street Playground is closed to facilitate the restoration process. We’ve reached out to the Conservancy for an estimated timeline and project budget.
