Central Park Field Hospital To Close

The temporary field hospital in Central Park will stop admitting new patients on Monday, May 4th, Mount Sinai Hospital said. It is expected to take about two weeks to close the facility completely.

A total of 315 patients were treated at the field hospital, according to Mount Sinai.

“While this crisis is far from over, this marks a significant turning point in the coronavirus outbreak in New York that gives us assurance that we are returning towards normalcy,” Mount Sinai said in a statement.

Mount Sinai had partnered with Samaritan’s Purse to run the hospital. Samaritan’s Purse faced protests from LGBTQ activists, as the controversial relief organization requires volunteers to sign statements of faith which includes a vow against same sex marriage.

Council Member Corey Johnson, among other local leaders, also publicly expressed opposition towards the group and their involvement.

Senator Brad Hoylman told NBC New York that approximately forty employees of Samaritan’s Purse would stay within the Mount Sinai system and would be redeployed to Beth Israel Hospital.
