A new sushi spot has quietly settled into a familiar corner just west of Columbus Avenue, breathing fresh life into a storefront that had sat dormant since last summer.

Toro 7 Sushi opened earlier this month at 103 West 70th Street, the same space that previously housed Amber, which closed and combined forces with Flame at 100 West 82nd Street in July 2025. The new arrival bills itself as upscale, promising premium sushi, creative rolls, and traditional Japanese fare made with daily-fresh seafood. According to the restaurant’s website, signature dishes include fresh sashimi, chef’s special rolls, Spicy Tuna Crab Pizza, toro tartar, and a wide selection of tempura. The menu extends well beyond sushi into ramen, udon, gyoza, and teriyaki territory.Early reviews are mostly positive, with the Hobbit Roll (shrimp tempura, snow crab, mango, and avocado topped with tuna, bonito flakes, and kimchi sauce) emerging as the runaway favorite — multiple Google reviewers have called it the best special roll they’ve had in ages. The kitchen also gets credit for skipping the filler in its spicy salmon, and the Big Mac Roll (crunchy spicy tuna, avocado, snow crab, bonito flakes and tobiko, wrapped in sesame soy paper and topped with eel sauce) draws repeat praise for its proportions. Diners have flagged the friendly staff and casual-but-welcoming atmosphere as well.
Toro 7 Sushi is open seven days a week from 12:30 to 9:30 p.m. The restaurant can be reached by phone at 646-454-9468 and their website is toro7sushi.com.
