Construction on a new outdoor fitness area for adults, picked by local residents through participatory budgeting, is about to get underway.

The fitness area will be built in Riverside Park South, next to the bike path at West 71st Street. “Construction by NYC Parks is expected to begin next week,” Council Member Gale Brewer wrote in an email to constituents. She added that it’s “another project District 6 residents chose through Participatory Budgeting.”

According to Brewer, the project is “funded in part with $250,000 in PB funding.” The NYC Parks capital project tracker lists total funding of $309,000 from City Council and mayoral sources.

The project’s design plan, posted on Brewer’s website, shows a 0.05-acre site with a new safety surface. The equipment includes a climber station for climbing or stretching, plyometric boxes, a Swiss ladder, a sit-up bench, and a multi-level pull-up bar. There are also accessible pieces, including an extra-wide ADA pull-up bar and ADA triple parallel bars for working the chest, back and shoulders. The plan says the new installation will match the existing recreation area. It’ll be next to the park’s parkour equipment and handball courts.

On timing, Brewer wrote that the “official completion date is Fall 2027, but Parks expects the work to be finished sooner.” The Parks Department’s tracker lists a construction start date of October 2026 and a projected completion date of October 2027.
