Szechuan Gourmet, a Sichuan restaurant that spent years earning Michelin Guide recommendations at its Midtown location, has opened on the Upper West Side. The restaurant welcomed its first customers on September 12, a couple of weeks after we first spotted its signage going up.

The new location is at 239 West 105th Street, between Broadway and Amsterdam, the storefront that housed Szechuan Garden until that restaurant closed in March 2025. When we first reported on the signage, we noted the similar names and wondered whether the two were connected. They’re not. “Szechuan Gourmet and Szechuan Garden are separate businesses,” a representative told us, adding that this isn’t a second outpost but a relocation: the restaurant moved uptown from its longtime home at 21 West 39th Street.

That Midtown location built up quite a track record. Szechuan Gourmet’s website displays a 2008 review from The New York Times along with Michelin Guide recommendations from 2011 through 2016, and again in 2023 and 2024, with the guide singling out dishes like cumin lamb, tea-smoked duck, dan dan noodles and chili oil noodles over the years.

The menu at the new spot centers on traditional Sichuan cooking. The restaurant highlights classics like mapo tofu and spicy dry pot alongside hand-pulled noodles, and says it aims to serve both diehard fans of Sichuan heat and people trying the cuisine for the first time.
