The Upper East Side is getting it first, but the Upper West Side won’t be waiting long. One of New York City’s best known doughnut makers is opening two Manhattan shops in the coming months, and the second one is landing on Broadway before the year is out.

Doughnut Plant is taking a space at 2169 Broadway, between West 76th and 77th Streets, according to the New York Times. The First Avenue shop on the Upper East Side is expected to open by November, with the Broadway location following before the end of December.The company goes back to 1994, when founder Mark Isreal started making doughnuts from his grandfather’s recipe in a Lower East Side basement and delivering them by bicycle to neighborhood coffee shops. That turned into a storefront on Grand Street, and from there into a small chain with locations on the Lower East Side, in Grand Central Terminal, Prospect Heights, Williamsburg and Long Island City. The Long Island City space doubles as the bakery and headquarters, where everything is made by hand each day and then sent out to the shops.
Doughnut Plant claims a long list of firsts, including the crème brûlée doughnut, the Doughflower and the vegan Sourdoughnut. The menu runs through yeast-raised and cake doughnuts alongside vegan and gluten-free options and rotating seasonal flavors, plus small-batch coffee, espresso drinks, teas and chai. Nothing is made with eggs, not even the cake doughnuts or the cream fillings, which makes the whole lineup vegetarian. It’s all certified kosher by the International Kosher Council.
