Trick-or-Treating, Live Music, and a Costume Parade (Pets Welcome) Return to Morningside Heights

If you’re still looking for Halloween plans, there’s a free one just up the street. A group of Morningside Heights community organizations is teaming up on Saturday, October 31 for an afternoon of trick-or-treating, kids’ crafts, live music, and a costume parade, and organizers are billing it as the largest Halloween event in Northern Manhattan.

Haunted Fountain at the Cathedral runs from 2 to 6 p.m. on the Open Street at Amsterdam Avenue and W 111th Street, with trick-or-treating on the grounds of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. It’s presented by the W 111th Street Block Association along with the Cathedral, ACT: A Tots to Teens Program, the International Brazilian Opera Company’s Kimera Festival, El Taller Latino Americano, and others.

“This is our seventh annual Halloween extravaganza,” said Doug Lavin of the W 111th Street Block Association, who added that the group expects hundreds of neighbors to turn out. “This tradition started as a fun and safe outdoor activity during COVID and has only grown since then, attracting partnerships with the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, the International Brazilian Opera Company, Morningside Merchants local business association, and many others.”

Here’s the schedule:

  • 2 to 5 p.m.: Live music from the Kimera Festival of Music & Storytelling on Amsterdam Avenue at W 111th Street
  • 3 to 5 p.m.: Trick-or-treating and crafts for kids in the Cathedral gardens, inside the grounds at W 111th Street and Amsterdam Avenue
  • 5 to 6 p.m.: Costume parade and contest on Amsterdam Avenue at W 111th Street, open to kids, adults, and pets

Everything’s free and no registration is required. Trick-or-treating and crafts are first come, first served while supplies last, and they’re recommended for children over the age of 3. Adults must accompany kids.

“This will be a wonderful performance of the Kimera Festival of Music & Storytelling, which features top international and local musicians performing original work of wildly diverse genres,” said Athena Azevedo of the International Brazilian Opera Company. “We’ve seen an outpouring of support for these concerts, which allow us to bring amazing talent to Morningside Heights.”

The event also showcases the block association’s Open Street program, which closes Amsterdam Avenue between W 110th and W 111th Streets to cars on Saturdays.
