6 Recent Restaurant Openings: How the UWS Feels So Far

In case you missed them, here are some new Upper West Side restaurants which opened in the neighborhood during the last couple months, along with some commentary from online critics.

Canto upper west side review

Canto opened in early September at 2014 Broadway (at 69th Street), and while review on ILTUWS wasn’t super positive, they’re getting somewhat mixed reviews from the neighborhood, with a score of 4.4 out of 5 stars on Google (but a 3.9 on Yelp). Quite a few folks are praising their cocktails, as did Emma. Canto has also gotten a decent amount of love for some of their dishes, including their lobster ravioli and lamb chops, along with the ambiance of the space. On the not-so-positive side, a number of diners have expressed disappointment over the restaurant’s loud atmosphere, slow service, and rude owner. cantonyc.com/location/upper-west-side

There was a lot of buzz around the opening of Gnocchi on 9th, which has been serving its viral takeout gnocchi at 228 Columbus Avenue (between 70th and 71st streets) since late August. The fast-food Italian joint’s media savvy owners have successfully created a photo-friendly, marketable product; their signature takeout boxes have been making their rounds on TikTok and Instagram since the eatery’s first location opened in April. As far as the taste goes? The Upper West Side location currently has Google and Yelp scores of 4 and 4.1, respectively. Five-star reviews emphasize a fresh, hot lunch option for a reasonable rate, while naysayers describe the gnocchi as very mediocre, something anyone with a pot and some boiling water could make. gnocchinyc.com/upper-west-side

Rudraks opened in August at 706 Amsterdam Avenue (between 94th and 95th streets) and Bobby Panza was impressed with the food, the atmosphere and the price points. The new Indian restaurant is faring well by online standards, holding a Google score of 4.9 and a Yelp score of 5 (though the Yelp page only has two reviews so far). Reviewers have consistently praised the authenticity of the food and the variety of the menu, the ambiance, and the friendly service. Rudraks is definitely a keeper, at least so far. rudraks.com

California-based sushi chain Sugarfish opened in early August at 207 West 75th Street (between Amsterdam and Broadway), marking its sixth location in NYC. Most of our readers were excited about the addition, but a few folks were vehemently opposed, with one Instagram follower calling it “Garbage corporate food” and another person calling it “boring.” As of writing, the UWS Sugarfish has a Google score of 4.8 and a Yelp score of 5 (based on only one review). The worst Google review came with a score of 3 stars, which really isn’t that bad, and the author opened her review to state that she had better experiences at other Sugarfish locations. sugarfishsushi.com/locations/upper-west-side

D’lioz Bakery opened at 926 Amsterdam Avenue (between West 105th and 106th streets) on July 30. The small hybrid eatery serves a combination of hot Mexican staples (tacos, tostadas, sopes, empanades), sandwiches, and a variety of sweets including cakes, muffins, cookies and more. Reviews are rock solid, with a 4.8 on Google (there was only one 1-star review, and the reviewer didn’t leave any comments). Lots of taco-based compliments. dliozbakery.com

Gelateria Gentile opened in early August at 498 Amsterdam Avenue (at 84th Street), its fifth location in the city and first outpost north of Union Square. The homemade Italian gelato company is doing really well on Google (4.8). Only five Yelpers have left reviews–they’re currently at a 3.6 but that could change with a single positive writeup. Happy customers have praised both the gelato and pastries. As far as their gelato goes, pistachio seems to be the favorite.
