Emergency crews responded to an Upper West Side residential building Tuesday morning after a man was found dead inside, prompting a hazardous materials response that closed out hours later.

The FDNY received the call at 9:07 a.m. on Tuesday, June 2, for a reported hazardous materials condition at 240 West 73rd Street, between Broadway and West End Avenue. EMS transported one civilian to an area hospital with minor injuries.
According to the NYPD, officers found a 29-year-old man deceased inside a locked bathroom at the location. The city medical examiner will determine the official cause of death. The investigation remains ongoing.
“On background, the individual appears to have died by suicide,” an NYPD official told ILTUWS. “Additionally, a bucket with unknown chemicals was recovered in the bathroom with the individual.”
