The front door was off its hinges as someone with a pushcart moved belongings out of Zurutto Ramen & Gyoza Bar at 142 West 72nd Street, between Columbus and Amsterdam avenues on Friday. Opened in the spring of 2016, Zurutto is looking to relocate nearby soon, according to a note left on the door, which was leaning next to the entrance under the wooden sign and awning. Thanks to Kelsey Martino for the tip.

“Dear Valued Customers, thank you for your support over the years,” read the letter. “We are deeply grateful for all the memories and your loyalty.” The staff on hand said they were not 100% sure of the reason for the closure, but suspected rent played a part.
Across the street, Zen Medica closed after 13 years in June 2025, citing rent and tariffs affecting prices and product availability. Owner Chow Mok relocated her business online. Zurutto, however, is owned by the same team behind Tenzan, the sushi spot a block north at 285 Columbus Avenue between West 73rd and 74th streets. We’ve reached out to learn more about their next steps in relocating nearby.

Now we wait for Zurutto’s Clearspring Organic Brown Ramen Noodles to return; they cook in under five minutes and are made with organic grains, Japanese miso, and the sharp flavor of ginger. Their Zurutto Classic Ramen ($15) is served with chicken broth, chashu pork, seasoned boiled egg, bamboo shoots, onion, and scallion with egg noodles. Their menu notes they don’t offer wheat or rice noodles.

Zurutto also lists the spice level of their dishes, from level one to three. We’re fans of the level three Truffle Mazeman ($18): sesame base, spicy oil, parmesan cheese, ground pork, seasoned boiled egg, onion chips, scallion, and white truffle oil with egg noodles.
On the other end of the spice spectrum, but just as tasty, their Vegetable Miso ($18), a level one, is made with vegetable broth, original miso, cabbage, bean sprouts, onion, scallion, kimchi, corn, and bamboo shoots with egg noodles. Their kimchi appetizer ($5), spicy tuna tacos ($10), and seaweed salad ($7) are some clutch appetizer picks we hope to devour again soon.
Zurutto is listed as “temporarily closed” on Google, where it holds an honorable 4.4-star rating (out of five). One local who showed up hoping to grab a table told us, “Of course this closes in the summer, when it’s hot out and people are less inclined to want to eat hot soups. But I’m that girl!” She was unsure where she’d head next to satisfy her appetite.

NOOOOO!!! This was one of the very few decent, affordable restaurants on the lower part of the UWS. Closings such as this are why I left my UWS abode over six years ago. Keep on going, NYC – soon you won’t have ANY more residents left!
Yuki Sushi (formerly Kumo) is still across 72nd and reasonably priced.
There’s good reasonably priced Thai food — Sala for lunch in particular. There’s Malachy’s.
Right, “one of the very few decent, affordable restaurants on the lower part of the UWS”, not the very last or only one.
This is a loss for W72nd. I hope they find a new spot close by. It was one of our favorites for the amazing quality but also very friendly staff!
