Xi’an previously had a location at 2675 Broadway (between 101st and 102nd streets), and officially returned to the UWS in December with its new location at 309 Amsterdam Avenue (between 74th and 75th streets).
With 18 current locations, the popular chain known for its spicy cumin lamb noodles, stewed pork burgers, and other regional specialties from China’s Shaanxi Province appears to be on a growth path, with a soon-to-open location on the Upper East Side (that neighborhood’s second) and another dozen in the works, a rep for the eatery recently told us.

Jason Wang and his father, David Shi, launched Xi’an Famous Foods in the basement of a Flushing mall back in 2005. What began as a modest food stall has since grown into one of New York City’s most recognizable restaurant brands.

The chain has earned high praise from both diners and industry insiders—Jason was named a semifinalist for Best Restaurateur by the James Beard Foundation, a nod to his leadership and the brand’s rising influence. Media outlets have also taken notice: Time Out currently ranks Xi’an Famous Foods as the 7th best restaurant in the country (down from its original #2 spot when the list debuted in 2016), and Tasting Table recently placed it second on its list of the best Chinese restaurant chains in America.
We’ve reached out to the restaurant for an estimated opening date for the new location.
A popular Palestinian restaurant called Ayat will also soon be opening near Columbia campus.
