Founded inside a Miami Beach gas station in 1993, Carrot Express has grown into a small chain of eateries serving health-focused food, offering all-day breakfast, lunch, and dinner with a creative menu of balanced, nutritious dishes. Signage is up at 2169 Broadway, between West 76th and 77th Streets, right next door to the now-closed Harmon Health & Beauty.

Carrot Express currently operates three locations in New York City, all in Manhattan. It first sprouted in 2022 on 23rd Street in the Flatiron District. The Upper West Side location will be its fourth or fifth in the city; the address already appears on the company’s website. Two other spots are in Midtown—one near Bryant Park and the other at East 52nd Street and Lexington Avenue. A Nolita location at 100 Kenmare Street is also listed as “coming soon.”

How about a power bagel to start the day? Boiled eggs, arugula, mozzarella, avocado, tomato, red pepper flakes, and extra virgin olive oil on a sesame bagel—served with a side of aioli. The Flatiron location lists this sandwich for $15.99 on its all-day breakfast menu, alongside the gluten-free carrot waffle, which is also dairy-free and topped with blueberries, strawberries, banana, almond butter, and coconut flakes. It comes with maple syrup. The huevos rancheros burrito ($17.59) looks like a clutch option if you’re on the go: scrambled eggs, brown rice, black beans, corn, avocado, jack cheese, and pico de gallo, all toasted in a whole wheat wrap.

Hey, Carrot Express is in the açaí bowl game too—the trendy menu item that’s become almost as common as cookies. True to their name, though, Carrot Express has a short bench to choose from here. Their almond butter açaí bowl ($16.99) features Brazilian açaí, almond butter, cacao nibs, granola, strawberries, blueberries, bananas, and pineapple. The other option is the paradise açaí bowl ($15.99), made with Brazilian açaí, granola, strawberries, blueberries, banana, pineapple, toasted coconut flakes, and honey. They also offer a pair of vegan soups—Lentil and Kale, and Carrot–Sweet Potato—for $9.99 each.

Burgers and sandwiches fall into another category at Carrot Express. Their salmon burger comes in at 672 calories—homemade and served with arugula, alfalfa, tomato, onion, and spicy mayo on a toasted multigrain bun. You can add a house salad, sweet potato fries, Caesar salad, or Green Goddess salad for an additional $2.00 to $2.50. Take a walk with the Chicken Goddess ($20.99): panko-crusted free-range chicken, baby mozzarella, tomato, red onion, and citrus honey mustard slaw.

Power bowl options run deep, with eight choices—starting with the poke bowl ($25.00), made with brown rice or quinoa, seaweed, edamame, arugula, cucumber, avocado, carrots, pickled ginger, sesame seeds, crispy onions, spicy mayo, and eel sauce. The Miami Vegan Bowl ($22.99) looks especially tasty, with brown rice, black beans, avocado, Beyond Meat picadillo, sweet plantains, and pico de gallo. Baked goods include Carrot Express cookies too: coconut guava, oatmeal pistachio, and chocolate chunk walnut, each priced at $6.99.

Smoothies, juices, and what they call “refreshers” are also on the menu. Matcha lemonade, which looks more green than yellow, is made with ceremonial Japanese matcha, lemon, and honey. Carrot juice or orange juice is priced at $9.99. They also offer a Peanut Butter Cup Smoothie ($11.99), made with peanut butter, almond milk, cocoa, banana, dates, and unflavored protein powder.

Mario Laufer, the founder of Carrot Express, told the Miami New Times about his origin story from the early 1990s in March 2022: “At the time, I was in another industry—manufacturing ladies’ clothing,” he said. “I had come to a point in my life when I had to clean up my diet for health reasons. I had to take it seriously, and I decided to focus on something I’d become truly passionate about — and that was cooking.”
