Variety Coffee Roasters is now open at 455 Amsterdam Avenue (on the corner of 82nd Street), replacing MALIN+GOETZ, which closed this location in 2023. Another MALIN+GOETZ can be found at 100 West 72nd Street on the corner of Columbus Avenue.
Founder and owner Gavin Compton opened Variety Coffee’s first location in Williamsburg in 2008. They’ve since expanded to Bushwick, Greenpoint, the Upper East Side, Chelsea, Park Slope and the Financial District.

“Our coffees are a direct reflection of what’s in-season, so our menu changes frequently throughout the year. The fresher the crop, the better the coffee,” the coffee shop’s website states.

“The two times I was in there already, I was met with friendly and upbeat servers,” our tipster Dentodd told us. “The space is small, sleek and uncluttered, with a full window fronting. I was familiar w Variety from their downtown location, so my smooth Americano was a given. And best yet, after the middle of the month, they will be open til 9pm, long after all the other coffee shops have locked their doors for the day.”

The business also offers a selection of pastries, and their products (coffee and accessories) can be purchased online.
“When it comes to sourcing coffee, our focus has always been freshness,” reads the website’s ‘about’ page. “We have built a menu that reflects the various growing seasons of different coffee growing regions, and strive to showcase only the freshest coffees. We roast every day here in Brooklyn because we f*cking love coffee.”
Variety Coffee Roasters is currently open daily from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Starting September 15, it will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
