Manhattan D.A. Bragg has announced the indictment of 25-year-old Joshua Zinberg, who made headlines in November for reportedly slashing a tourist on West 86th Street. Zinberg is being charged with Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, Assault in the First Degree, and Assault in the Second Degree.

“Joshua Zinberg allegedly slashed an international tourist who was walking on the Upper West Side in an unprovoked and brazen daylight attack. When tourists visit New York, they should not have to fear for their safety,” said District Attorney Bragg. “We will continue to prosecute those who commit random acts of violence on the streets of Manhattan. I hope the victim continues to heal from this horrifying assault.”

The unprovoked assault took place on November 20 at about 10:22 a.m., when Zinberg left his parked car to randomly chase a 55-year-old Danish tourist who was walking down West 86th Street with two other people. Dressed in shorts and a t-shirt on a cold November day, Zinberg ran towards the man with a knife in his hand. Once he caught up to the unsuspecting victim, he slashed the side of his face from his ear to his neck before running back to his car.

Zinberg drove off and the victim was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for “his severed ear and a deep laceration in his neck,” a press release from the D.A.’s office states. Zinberg was arrested the next day while driving his same car. He was wearing the same clothes he had on during the violent attack.

At the time of the incident, it was revealed that Zinberg lived just around the corner from the incident at 170 West 85th Street, and that his mom was the one who ultimately turned him in.
