On Monday, Donald Hoy celebrated his 105th birthday at Amsterdam Nursing Home (1060 Amsterdam Ave at West 112th Street), where he’s resided since 2015. Staff members organized a party with live music and the event was attended by Donald’s family, friends and fellow residents.

Contrary to common expectations for someone his age, Donald is far from being confined to a chair or bed. In fact, he’s often the life of the party, and continues to be a central figure in the community at the nursing facility.

“You can discuss anything with him, share a joke, and he’s right there with you,” said Moshe Blackstein, the facility’s administrator.

Last year, Donald grew close with a fellow resident named Stephanie, a lively 85-year-old. Although she passed away in November due to polyneuropathy, Donald often reminisces about her with a smile, and has been embraced by her family as one of their own. He also cherishes memories of his mother, who was once a resident of the same facility.

Before retiring, Donald had a long career as a security officer for multiple organizations, having previously served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Despite the challenges of serving in a segregated unit due to his mixed-race heritage, Donald holds strong memories of his service.

Reflecting on significant historical figures, Donald expresses admiration for leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Muhammed Ali and shares his respect for former President Barack Obama’s tenure, though he expresses disappointment over Vice President Kamala Harris not achieving the presidency.

When asked about the secret to his longevity, Donald credits his faith. “People often ask me how I’ve lived so long, and I say it’s God’s doing. But when they ask why God doesn’t do the same for them, I tell them that’s a question for Him. It’s a spirit within me, and I don’t ask for more time; I know many do.”
