A beloved doorman at an Upper West Side building was violently attacked while on duty — and his neighbors have launched a fundraising campaign to help him through what could be a lengthy recovery.

Nicolate “George” Lica, a doorman at 255 West 88th Street, was recently assaulted by the guest of a tenant while working in the building’s lobby. The attack left him hospitalized with serious injuries, including broken ribs. He has since been released and is recovering at home.A GoFundMe campaign organized by building resident Constantin Schoelkopf has raised nearly $12,000 (the campaign goal) to help Lica cover expenses that may not be fully addressed by insurance or his employment benefits — including home care, medical equipment, medications, transportation to appointments, and possible modifications to his living space.
“George was hospitalized with broken ribs, but has since been released from the hospital and is at home at the moment,” Schoelkopf told us. “I heard about the incident from his fellow doormen — that he was assaulted by the guest of a tenant and was severely injured, and I wanted to give George a sense that his community supports him and cares.”
The campaign, which has raised about $20,000, describes Lica as someone who greets residents with a warm smile and helps keep the building community safe. Beyond immediate medical costs, organizers note that his recovery may make everyday tasks — grocery shopping, meal preparation, and general upkeep — significantly more difficult, at least for a time.
