Two Break-Ins Occur Just a Block Apart

Early Saturday morning, broken glass and signs of forced entry were evident at Amber, a sushi restaurant at 103 West 70th Street between Columbus and Broadway, as well as at La Mode Cleaners at 106 West 71st Street (between the same avenues).

A police van was parked directly in front of Amber and police tape surrounded the premises when ILTUWS arrived at the scene of the crime at 8:45 a.m. Typically, a police van would be stationed across the street to monitor the migrant shelter at Stratford Arms at 117 West 70th, but that shelter closed on February 1.

While surveying the area, a neighbor walking by stopped and asked if we were aware of the break-in at La Mode Cleaners, one block up on West 71st. We headed over and found Juan, a clerk who was cleaning up broken glass.

“I just got here a little while ago,” Juan said, visibly astonished when we mentioned we had just come from another break-in a block away. He expressed disappointment about both incidents, noting that he enjoys Amber’s food. “They broke in and took the money, but I think that’s it,” he added.

La Mode Cleaners recently relocated from its location at 106 West 69th Street.

ILTUWS has contacted the NYPD for more details and will provide updates when we know more.
